NC Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

July 27, 2010

This Division of state government in North Carolina offers a variety of services for the deaf, the hard of hearing, the deaf-blind, and those who want to assist them.

One new item of interest is the Driver Communication Card.

In partnership with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, deaf and hard of hearing citizens can obtain a Driver Communication Card to facilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing drivers and law enforcement officers. State and local law enforcement officers throughout North Carolina are trained to recognize the cards and understand their purpose.

The service is free.

To access services, the Division offers Regional Resource Centers throughout the state where trained personnel are available to answer questions and to assist with service access.

The Division also offers a wealth of brochures and fact sheets covering a broad range of topics for both the deaf population and those trying to understand how to communicate and how to relate.
