On April 20th the Orange County Board of Commissioners officially passed a resolution naming the adult day health program wing of the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough in honor of Florence Gray Soltys. This wing was formerly called Senior Care of Orange County.  Jack Chestnut, President of Senior Care of Orange County, Inc. that operates the adult day health program on behalf of the county, stated that “ We are extremely happy about this and appreciate the County Commissioners’ action. Everyone is invited.  There will be tours of the center, refreshments, and music as part of the unveiling ceremony that will take place around 5 p.m.

The Senior Care Board will also be announcing the establishment of the “Florence Soltys Memorial Scholarship Fund” to carry out Florence’s wish that everyone, regardless of income, will be helped if they need adult day health to remain at home. Congratulations to TJAAA Director, Joan Pellettier

February 16, 2010

Though it’s not new news, as we make the shift to this blog format for our announcements and information to keep you up-to-date, we don’t want you to miss the announcement about our AAA Director.

NC House Speaker Joe Hackney has appointed two AAA Directors, Mary Barker from Region A and Joan Pellettier from the Triangle J Area Agency on Aging to the NC Study Commission on Aging. In addition, he appointed a third non-elected official, Pat Sprigg, CEO at Carol Woods Retirement Community. Nominees are looking forward to advancing the important aging agenda in the NC General Assembly.

As outlined in Chapter 120, Article 21 of the North Carolina General Statutes, the North Carolina Study Commission on Aging is charged with studying and evaluating the existing system of delivery of state services to older adults and recommending an improved system of delivery to meet the present and future needs of older adults.

The Commission consists of 17 members. Of these members, eight are appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, eight are appointed by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, and the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services or the Secretary’s designee serves as an ex officio, non-voting member.

Congratulations Joan, we’re proud of you!

And, it serves all of us well to have an accomplished and experienced advocate in a position to keep key legislators informed about important issues related to aging.
